ESFA and Partners Commemorate World Environment Day 2026 in Buea, Southwest Cameroon
On 5 June 2026, Ethical and Sustainable Future for All (ESFA), alongside partner organizations, commemorated World Environment Day 2026 under the global theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The event brought together community members, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, environmental advocates, and local leaders in the Mile 15 Community of Buea, Southwest Region of Cameroon.
The celebration aimed to raise awareness on environmental protection, climate action, sustainable natural resource management, and community participation in safeguarding the environment for future generations.

World Environment Day serves as a global platform for encouraging environmental awareness and action. It highlights the urgent need to address climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and environmental degradation through collective responsibility and community-driven solutions.
2. Objectives of the Activity
The activity sought to:
- Raise awareness on environmental conservation and climate change mitigation.
- Promote community participation in environmental protection initiatives.
- Strengthen knowledge on sustainable waste management practices.
- Highlight the role of women in environmental protection and climate resilience.
- Educate community members on the importance of protecting wetlands, streams, and other natural ecosystems.
- Enhance practical skills in tree management and conservation.
- Promote tree planting as a sustainable climate action strategy.

The event brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including:
- Members of the Traditional Council of Mile 15 Community.
- Community leaders and representatives.

The active participation of traditional authorities and community leaders demonstrated strong local commitment toward environmental sustainability and climate action.
4. Activities Implemented
4.1 Awareness and Educational Sessions
A series of presentations and interactive discussions were conducted on key environmental issues affecting communities.
a) The Role of Women in Environmental Protection
Participants discussed the significant contribution of women in environmental stewardship, natural resource management, household waste management, climate adaptation, and sustainable community development. The session emphasized the need to strengthen women’s participation in environmental decision-making processes.

b) Protection of Wetlands and Streams
The importance of wetlands and streams as critical ecosystems was highlighted. Participants learned about the role these natural resources play in maintaining biodiversity, regulating water cycles, preventing erosion, and supporting livelihoods. Discussions focused on community responsibility in preventing pollution and encroachment on wetlands.
c) Waste Management in Communities
