Environmental Monitoring and Reporting: ESFA statement on the Landslide that occurred in Dschang Hill, the West Region of Cameroon

Buea-5 November 2024: Ethical and Sustainable Future for All (ESFA) is deeply saddened by the loss of lives, destruction of vehicles and the disturbance of traffic due to the catastrophic Landslide that occurred today the 5th of November 2024 in Dschang Hill, the West Region of Cameroon. ESFA extends its sincere condolences to those who have lost family members in this environmental disaster. Our hearts go out to all the survivors and those who have been injured. While waiting for an official statement from the local authorities in the West Region of Cameroon, It is reported that at least three people have lost their lives. This happened when the first responders tried to clear the blocked road due to the first landslide. Unfortunately, the second landslide occurred while claiming the lives of people and destroying vehicles and other tools.

ESFA commend the efforts of the first responders, rescuers, and the local authorities who worked and have continued to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of all those who are affected during this environmental disaster.

It is worth noting that, recently there has been too much rainfall and the Climate Change Observatory had earlier warned of the risk of landslide in seven regions of Cameroon including the West Region. This is a call for concern and this equally reminds us of the escalating impact of Climate Change globally. This is a call for climate action and it requires a holistic and collective approach to address climate.

ESFA calls on the national and international community to take active participation in climate action in supporting survivors and mitigating climate change. We equally call on the global community to support Cameroonian’s efforts and provide additional resources to aid in the recovery and rebuilding process.
